Cellist W. Gage Ehmann believes that the excitement of chamber playing is the musical idea instantaneously transformed through distinct voices unified in interpretation: this focused human interaction propels him to make music.
Setting forth with the inspiration of his older neighbor and cellist Daniel Hawkins, Gage joined The Wednesday Club of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania as a member of its youth orchestra and soloist program. Mentored by Daniel Gaisford throughout high school, Gage attended the full scholarship Pennsylvania Governor’s School for the Arts. He continued to pursue cello under pedagogue Dr. Tanya Carey at the Chicago College of Performing Arts, Roosevelt University. There, Gage recorded orchestral compositions as part of the Vector New Music Project led by conductor Cliff Colnot, and performed in masterclass for Vienna Philharmonic Principal Tamás Varga.
Summers have afforded study with André Emelianoff at Bowdoin International Music Festival, Dr. Melissa Kraut at Meadowmount School of Music, and Terry King at the Castleman Quartet Program in Boulder, Colorado. Most recently, Gage collaborated with members of the Chicago-based Fifth House Ensemble in premiers of four chamber works during the intensive two-week Fresh Inc Festival. He is currently honored with a Resident Artist Fellowship at the Atlantic Music Festival. In the fall, Gage will begin graduate studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London.
