Ayaka Arai is currently a Masters degree student at DePaul University and studies double bass with Michael Hovnanian. She started music with composition and electronic organ using the YAMAHA Method at an early age. She graduated from Toho College of Music (BM) and Toho Gakuen School of Music (Graduate course). She studied double bass with Hiroshi Tanaka, bassist of the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, Shunsaku Tsutsumi and David Murray (in the U.S.) and the solo bassist Gary Karr (in Canada) since 2008. She performed at the Victoria Summer Music Festival in Canada with Gary Karr in 2013 and 2014. She received the Jury Prize at the 4th Burkhardt International Music Competition in the Chamber Music Division and the special honorable recognition award at the 9th Japan Ensemble Competition Duo Category (with Etsuko Tochino; piano) in 2008. She worked as a bass instructor in KAWAI music school in Omotesando in 2014-2019. At the Toho College of Music, she completed a course at Wien Music Academy in Austria with Michael Pistelok and attended a concert tour in Poland. At the Toho Gakuen School of Music, she studies composition with Tokuhide Niimi (the specially appointed professor of composition department), attends the classes of composition majors, and her orchestra work was performed by the school orchestra. Under Gary Karr’s teaching, she focused on solo music. As a soloist, she has performed with the conductor Seiji Ozawa and his chorus group.
