Emlyn Johnson

Flute, 2013

Emilyn JohnsonA native of North Carolina, Emlyn Johnson is a flutist pursuing her doctorate at the Eastman School of Music, where she studies with longtime mentor Bonita Boyd. This season has seen collaborations with Ensemble Signal and the Slee Sinfonietta, as well as her Eastman Theater solo debut in a performance of Boulez’s Memoriale with Eastman’s Musica Nova. Emlyn’s musical interests are wide-ranging, and she has found herself increasingly focused on the extreme ends of the musical spectrum, as an avid proponent of new music and an adamant supporter of the movement toward authenticity in the performance-practice of early music. Accordingly, her training outside of Eastman has been quite diverse, including summers spent performing operettas in the French countryside, delving into contemporary flute technique in Spain, playing Baroque flute in Toronto, repairing flutes in rural Vermont, exploring jazz fundamentals with Ali Ryerson, and attending more traditional orchestral festivals including Aspen and the Chautauqua Institution. A passionate educator who recently won Eastman’s 2012-2013 Teaching Assistant Prize, Emlyn is also on the faculty of the Eastman Community Music School and was the 2012 flute instructor at Belvoir Terrace, an arts camp for girls in Lenox, MA.
