For the third day of Fresh Inc, we broke into small groups to discuss a Harvard Business School case study examining the El Sistema program created by José Antonio Abreu, the late Venezuelan music educator and activist. We analyzed the case study from multiple perspectives and talked about everything from funding sources and government infrastructure to the importance of music in social impact programs.
Later in the afternoon, we learned about the ins-and-outs of creating an arts start-up. Melissa and Grace taught us how to find our artistic voices, fill a niche, and even how to create our own artistic and mission statements.
Today also featured our first performer showcase! We were excited to broadcast performances by our participants, especially since many of the programmed pieces were written by the participants themselves. This was also the first night of our fundraising match program – for each of the 10 concerts we livestream over the next two weeks during the festival, Melissa will be matching $100 per concert for a total of $1000 in matching funds to benefit organizations that support anti-racism efforts. All donations from this concert were raised for The Bail Project, an organization that prevents mass incarceration by paying bail and providing services for those in need.
