Justin Brown-Gnarra grew up in Pittsburgh, PA and began playing the flute at the age of 12. He completed his undergraduate work at McGill University and received his master’s degree from DePaul University. His teachers include Mark Sparks, Timothy Hutchins, and Rhian Kenny. He has served an associate member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, a position which enabled him to coach students in the Chicago Public Schools system. A passionate advocate for new music as a means to speak new voices and reach new audiences, he has collaborated with many composers in the creation and premieres of new acoustic and electroacoustic works for the flute. He has also assisted in this capacity as resident flutist for the Contemporary Music Workshop at Orford Musique. Similarly, his research interests concern the shifting landscapes of society and the roles that music and performers play within them. Outside of music, Justin enjoys cooking, gardening, and crosswords.
