Kevin Wilt (b. 1984) composes music that balances sophistication with accessibility, and experimentation with solid craftsmanship. His music has been praised for its expert orchestration, beautiful writing, and keen sense of mood and tonal balance. It has been performed throughout the United States by beginning musicians up to professionals of the highest caliber.
Kevin was recently awarded a grant by the Atlantic Coast Conference Band Directors Association to create a new multi-movement work for large wind ensemble. This summer he participated in the Fresh Inc. Festival in Kenosha, Wisconsin. In 2012 he was named as a semifinalist in the Midwest division of the Rapido! composition contest, resulting in a world premiere performance of Elemental Dances by the Fifth House Ensemble. Other recent performances include those by wind ensembles and orchestras from such institutions as Michigan State University, Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, University of Kansas, and the Metropolitan Wind Symphony. In January 2010, Maestro Leonard Slatkin led the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in a reading of the orchestra version of Song of the Phoenix at Orchestra Hall in Detroit.
He is equally at home composing for film and television, providing scores for many locally-produced films, earning him a Michigan Emmy® Award Nomination for Best Musical Composition. Recent projects include The Wars of Other Men, featuring a score conducted by Wilt, recorded at Aashrum Studios in Metro Detroit. In 2011, Wilt recorded a score composed for string quartet for the short film Renegade, produced by Riot Enterprises, Jonathan West, director. In 2009, his music was recorded by members of the New York Philharmonic and Metropolitan Opera Orchestra as part of the NYU/ASCAP Film Scoring Workshop.
Kevin holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Composition from Michigan State University, where he studied with Ricardo Lorenz. He completed his Masters Degree in Music Composition at MSU, working with Jere Hutcheson and Charles Ruggiero, and his Bachelors Degree in Music Composition and Theory from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, where he studied with James Hartway.
