Raphael Maranon is originally from the Philippines, but now is doing his undergraduate studies studying cello performance at Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University. He started playing cello in the fourth grade, in the U.S, through his school’s music program and is
now studying with Karen Basrak, cellist of Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Other influential cello teachers he has had in his life include Sarah Marsh and Nazar Dzhuryn. Mr. Maranon has worked with Thomas Mesa, Helen Callus, John Sharp, and members of the Avalon quartet in masterclasses. He has been invited to take part in festivals such as the Chicago international Music Institute, International Cello Institute, and the Fresh Inc Festival. Raphael enjoys playing in orchestras, chamber groups, and recitals. One of his most memorable experiences is being invited to play at Radyo Katipunan in the Philippines. Outside of music he enjoys going out into nature, yoga, and reading.
