Safety Second is a duo comprised of Nick Martinez (percussion, keyboards) and Alexis Letourneau (flute, vocals). The members met and formed while studying music education at the University of Georgia. Though they formed with the intent of performing on each other’s degree recitals, the duo very quickly bonded through mutual interest in popular music, chamber music education, and Cici’s Pizza©. Nick and Alexis enjoy writing their own songs to include alongside commissioned works and existing works for their modular instrumentation. Though they are only a duo, they expand and vary their sound through fixed electronic media, live audio processing, and each performing on multiple instruments throughout their sets. Audiences can expect to perform alongside ensemble members and move throughout the performance space. Safety Second hopes to combine this love of mixed repertoire and audience participation with their background in music education to empower students to explore diverse creative pathways. The duo plans to continue creating and developing their personal style while collaborating with other composers, performers, and audiences to create unique concert experiences.
Safety Second completed a residency with University of Georgia’s Hugh Hodgson School of Music in 2019 as part of DanczFest and were participants in Fifth House Ensemble’s Fresh Inc Festival in the summer of 2020. They most recently appeared on Annie Leeth’s album Mortal, released in December of 2019. Alexis and Nick are currently working towards master’s degrees in flute performance at the University of Iowa and music theory pedagogy at the Eastman School of Music, respectively.
