Chicago freelance violist Samantha Peng is a DePaul University (2021) graduate. During her studies–with the former Associate Principle of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Ann Marie Brink– Samantha earned her Master of Music degree in Viola Performance from DePaul. She holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Viola Performance from the University of North Texas (2018), studying in the studio of Daphne Gerling and Susan Dubois. Samantha is an avid performer and a sensitive teacher. Methods that teach ease of playing such as Karen Tuttle coordination and Alexander Technique fascinate her and she is committed to furthering her knowledge and passing on these techniques to the next generation of musicians. She has performed internationally in Chiba, Japan; Prague, Czechia; Detmold, Germany; and in the US primarily in the Midwest and in Texas.
After sixteen years of study, Samantha still loves the rich, dark chocolate sound the viola offers, and continues to explore it. She loves performing in large orchestras, small chamber groups, and as a soloist. She has performed extensively with many great ensembles including the National Orchestral Institute (2019) and the University of North Texas Symphony Orchestra (2016-18).
When she is not playing her viola, Samantha can be found at the nearest rock climbing wall cheering on fellow climbers!
